Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/14/23 Full Review Audience Member A fun, harmless adventure with good animation (nothing breathtaking but the few flying sequences are fun albeit lacking in the majesty of the How to Train Your Dragon movies; having a Welshman who used to work at Disney directing this movie helps), moments where I genuinely laughed out loud, some exciting set pieces and some amusing side characters but Jim Gaffigan feels miscast as "HJÖNK HJÖNK AM GOOSE" with an unfitting voice (Zendaya as a duckling I could roll with because her profile wasn't quite as large at the time as it is now, her voice acting is pretty good and she wasn't a case of blatant stunt casting like in Space Jam 2), the story's pretty generic feeling mostly like a ripoff of Despicable Me, - a [find: villain, replace: jerk] takes orphans under his, pardon the pun, wing for ulterior motives, planning to ditch them the first chance he gets once they're no longer useful only for them to grow on the protagonist as the movie goes along. It's more of a ripoff in terms of character dynamics rather than story and maybe Despicable Me didn't invent this concept but that was honestly the first movie that came to my mind, especially with jokes in the first act of how much the protagonist sucks at being a dad - the character development feels half-hearted and unearned, the movie has a bad habit of inserting pop songs that, even as someone who doesn't really get annoyed by them all that much, took me out of the movie and clashed with the nearly timeless setting the movie has (the revelation of what "Pleasant Valley" really is is the only indication that it's set in contemporary times; remove the human aspect from the movie entirely and it feels like it could take place at any point in time...at least, that's what I figured; maybe I'm looking too hard into this) and the villain isn't all that fun, mostly acting like a weird Gollum parody. His comeuppance felt surprisingly dark for this kind of film. Not the worst and not the first China-set animated movie to defeat their Big Bad this way but...yowch. Duck Duck Goose is by no means some hidden gem that did not deserve to be dumped on Netflix at the last minute in the U.S. (Europe, who did get to see it on the big screen, didn't seem to care either way) but I won't be lying when I admit that I had more fun than I was expecting from what was ultimately just a simple "it's ok" kind-of film. Guess having a guy who used to work at Disney back in the '90s directing had its benefits.
